The South Baldwin Chamber Foundation’s Junior Ambassadors recently spent the day exploring careers and community impact through Health & Emergency Services Day — an exciting, hands-on experience highlighting some of the key agencies that work tirelessly to keep our community safe and healthy.

Our first stop was the Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), where Director Tom Tyler and Public Information Officer & Communications Specialist Jessica Waters gave an in-depth look into how the EMA operates during emergencies. Students learned how communication, coordination, and leadership are crucial to protecting residents during countywide events, such as hurricanes. The group gained valuable insight into how the EMA collaborates with municipalities, fire departments, law enforcement, and schools to ensure public safety through timely decision-making and effective communication.
Next, the group visited Baldwin Health, our area’s newly built, state-of-the-art hospital. Chief Nursing Officer Karen Chastang and Drew Johnson, Director of the Med-Surg Orthopaedic Center, guided students through a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility. They shared details about hospital operations, patient care, and the wide range of career opportunities available in healthcare. Students were inspired by the level of innovation and dedication that goes into providing quality care to our growing community.
The day concluded with a visit to the Foley Fire Department, where the first-shift team introduced students to the tools, equipment, and teamwork required to respond to emergencies. The tour wrapped up with a motivating talk from Chief Darby, who emphasized the importance of leadership and influence, not just in the workplace, but in every aspect of life. He encouraged students to recognize the power of setting a positive example among their peers, families, and communities.
Through each visit, our Junior Ambassadors gained a deeper appreciation for the professionals who serve on the frontlines of health and safety in South Baldwin County. Days like these remind us that leadership begins with service, and that every career in public service plays a vital role in building a stronger, safer community.
