Last month, our Junior Ambassadors headed to the state capital for a day that perfectly blended Alabama’s rich history with a front-row seat to how our government works today. We started the morning with a tour of the State Capitol, taking in the architecture and the weight of the decisions made within its walls. From there, we took a literal walk through history on our way to the State Law Library. It was a powerful experience to walk the same path as leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and observe the steps of the Capitol where he stood during the fight for civil rights, all while catching a view of the famous Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church.

After exploring the Law Library, which houses both the Alabama Supreme Court and the Court of Civil Appeals. After working up an appetite, we headed over to the legendary Chris’ Hot Dogs for a quick lunch break. With everyone refueled, we made our way to the House for the highlight of the day. The students were thrilled to have a behind-the-scenes meet-and-greet with Representative Frances Holk-Jones, who gave them a real-world masterclass on the legislative process. She walked them through exactly how a bill moves from an idea into a committee and eventually to the House and Senate floors. More importantly, she talked about the heart of public service: listening to the people in your own community to make sure you are truly representing their needs.

To top off the afternoon, we moved into the gallery to watch a live session in action. Just before she took her chair on the floor, Representative Donna Givens stopped by for a quick visit with the group, giving the students one last personal connection to the leaders they were about to watch debate and vote. Seeing the session unfold live brought Representative Holk-Jones's discussion to life, leaving our Ambassadors with a much deeper understanding of what it means to lead and serve.
