Preparing Tomorrow's Leaders: Junior Ambassadors Build Financial Literacy Skills
Preparing students for the future means more than developing leadership skills and encouraging community involvement. It also means equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to make sound financial decisions. That's why the South Baldwin Chamber Foundation continues to make financial literacy an important part of its Junior Ambassador program.
This year's class gathered at the new Foley Community Library for an interactive financial readiness experience designed to introduce students to the financial responsibilities and decisions they will soon face as young adults.

The session began with a presentation from Alex Sweeney of SouthState Bank, who walked students through important financial concepts and practical money management skills. Topics included banking essentials, credit, responsible spending, budgeting, debt management, saving, and investing. Students learned financial tools and habits that can help set them up for success as they begin navigating adulthood.

Following the presentation, students put their knowledge to the test with the hands-on "Game of Life" financial simulation. Assigned careers and incomes challenged students to navigate real-world financial scenarios and balance everyday expenses such as housing, transportation, groceries, childcare, and other financial obligations. Along the way, unexpected expenses and competing priorities reinforced just how important planning, budgeting, and thoughtful financial decisions can be.
While these concepts may seem like lessons for adulthood, the Foundation believes that introducing financial literacy early gives students a valuable head start. Understanding how financial decisions affect future opportunities helps young people become more independent, confident, and prepared to navigate life's challenges.
For our Junior Ambassadors, leadership development extends beyond the classroom. We want these students to leave the program not only as engaged members of their community, but as informed decision-makers who are prepared to take responsibility for their own futures. Financial literacy is an important piece of that preparation.
A special thank you to Alex Sweeney and SouthState Bank for sharing their knowledge with our students, and to the Foley Community Library for providing a welcoming space for this year's learning experience.
By continuing to invest in experiences like these, the South Baldwin Chamber Foundation is helping prepare the next generation of leaders with practical skills that will serve them well beyond their high school years.
