Inspiring the Next Generation of Leaders: Inside Health & Emergency Services Day

The South Baldwin Chamber Foundation’s Junior Ambassadors recently spent the day exploring careers, leadership, and community service during Health & Emergency Services Day. This hands-on experience gave students an inside look at the professionals and organizations that work together every day to protect, serve, and care for our community.

Understanding the First Call for Help

The day began with a visit to Baldwin County 911, where students learned what happens behind the scenes when someone calls 9-1-1.

Students gained a better understanding of the critical role emergency telecommunicators play in gathering information, making quick decisions, and connecting those in need with the appropriate emergency responders. The visit gave students a new perspective on the importance of remaining calm under pressure, communicating clearly, and making decisions quickly—skills that extend far beyond emergency services and are valuable in any leadership role.

Exploring Careers in Healthcare

Next, the Junior Ambassadors visited Baldwin Health to explore the wide range of careers that make healthcare possible in their own community.

Students heard directly from healthcare leaders about different career paths, including the education, training, skills, and commitment required to work in specific roles. The conversations gave students a firsthand look at the many opportunities available within the healthcare industry and helped connect the education they are receiving today to potential careers in their future.

The experience also gave students a greater appreciation for the role Baldwin Health plays in their own lives. This is the hospital that serves them, their families, friends, and neighbors. Understanding how the hospital functions and the people who make it possible helped students see healthcare not just as a career field, but as an essential part of the community they call home.

A Lesson in Leadership and Service

The day concluded with a visit to the Foley Fire Department, where students learned more about the tools, equipment, training, and teamwork required to respond to emergencies.

With the visit taking place just days after the anniversary of September 11, Fire Chief Darby took a moment to reflect with the students on the events of 9/11 and the countless individuals who stepped forward to serve others during one of our nation’s most difficult moments. His message to the Junior Ambassadors extended beyond a career in emergency services. He challenged students to consider what service looks like in their own lives and reminded them that making a difference does not require a particular job title. Whether through a lifelong career dedicated to serving others or by simply standing alongside a neighbor and volunteering time to strengthen the community, there are countless opportunities to make an impact.

Students were encouraged to look around their own community, recognize the needs around them, and consider how they can use their time, talents, and leadership to help others. His message served as an important reminder that leadership is not only about what we accomplish for ourselves, but also about how we choose to show up for the people and communities around us.

Leadership Through Service

Throughout Health & Emergency Services Day, our Junior Ambassadors saw how different careers and agencies work together to keep our community safe and healthy—from the first 9-1-1 call to emergency response and patient care.

More importantly, students walked away with a broader understanding of what it means to serve. They saw professionals who have dedicated their careers to helping others and were challenged to consider the many ways they can contribute to their own community.

Experiences like these are an important part of the Junior Ambassador program, giving students the opportunity to step outside the classroom, meet local professionals, explore potential career paths, and better understand the role they can play in South Baldwin County.
